Inlaid Frame

We make inlaid frames using veneer banding set into a solid hardwood frame. We can also combine inlay banding with marquetry and other intarsia techniques using wood, shell, and other fine materials.

Inlaid icon frames offer several advantages over carved frames. The flat decorative surface coordinates better with the painted surface of an icon. And the inlay looks good in diffuse or frontal light, which is the typical lighting condition inside a church (carving requires bright raking light to look its best). Also, inlaid frames can often be more economical to make than ornate carved frames.

Inlaid frames are an American folk-art tradition that offers a good opportunity to bring something of our cultural heritage into the church. I have been surprised to discover that 19th-century American inlaid frames often seem to be an absolutely perfect match for Orthodox icons.
