Icons by Anna Pokrovskaya Gouriev

Anna Gouriev-Pokrovsky is a gifted iconographer who has had the rare advantage of growing up in the household of one of the world's most prominent icon painters, Ksenia Pokrovsky, her mother. Exposed to icon painting from her earliest childhood days in Moscow, Anna was surrounded by the steady coming and going of artists, theologians and intellectuals. It was this close network of family and friends which was instrumental in recovering the ancient tradition of icon painting during a time when few understood it or dared practice it except in secret.

Anna Gouriev and Ksenia Pokrovski now live in the Boston area where they share a studio. Anna works in egg-tempera with extensive use of hand-ground natural mineral pigments from Russia. Her works have a deep richness and harmony of color uncommon in modern icons.

Besides keeping busy responding to individual requests for panel icons, Anna has worked with her mother on several large commissions for churches such as St. Andrew Orthodox Church in Lexington, KY; Holy Annunciation in Brick Town, NJ; and St. Mary Magdalen Orthodox Church in Manhattan. Anna is currently working on two large commissions, one for St Sophia Hellenic Orthodox Church in New London, CT and the other for Holy Annunciation Orthodox Church in Maynard, MA. Anna also teaches iconography through the non-profit organization Hexaemeron.
